Survival myths, a.k.a. urban (wilderness) legends are popular beliefs shared with friends that are usually very wrong.
Let’s continue with myths 13-15
Help is only a phone call away.
Again, another false myth coming directly from Hollywood. When the characters of either a movie or a series suffer from any accident, they barely have time to cry for help, because nurses and police arrive in the blink of an eye. The wounded are assisted and the story has a happy ending. But we must ask ourselves: is this true? Well, not really. When you find yourself in an accident of any type you will naturally try to reach for help. They might pick it up, or they might not. You might have to wait before talking to a real person. After your call has been registered, some other problems might arise. For example, you might be located in an unreachable location in the wild or it might take time for help to arrive where you are.
If A Bomb Goes Off, Call 911.
Imagine that you are visiting a museum in a nice city, everything is going great but suddenly…BOOM! A bomb goes off. What do you do? Run to safety! Once you’re safe, you can call 911 to alert the authorities. But the priority is to get yourself and your family to safety. Imagine all the disastrous scenarios that could happen if you don’t hurry up and get out: another bomb could go off, the building could collapse and so on.
In the event of an electrical fire, unplug the appliance immediately.
If an electrical fire takes place, your instincts might tell you that the best idea is to unplug the appliance immediately. By doing this, you will prevent the fire from becoming larger and you will not be in danger anymore… Let me tell you that this is actually the worst idea you could have in case of an electrical fire. The main purpose when this undesired event happens is to extinguish the fire, but unplugging the appliance is definitely not a good idea. When you unplug or touch the appliance, you have a lot of chances to get electrocuted and maybe die. What you should do first is to trip the specific breaker of that appliance, call 911 and try to turn off the fire before it gets bigger.
